Welcome

Being a psychotherapist is a great privilege – to meet people at critical times, to come to know them deeply, and to help them sort through bewildering, sometimes frightening, often painful, thoughts, feelings, and behavior. At heart psychotherapy is about relationship – relationships past and present – and especially our relationship to our own self. It’s been my life’s work to help people know themselves more deeply and to live with greater vitality and authenticity. Psychotherapy is hard work that demands will, integrity, and courage.

John Michael Hayes, Ph.D., ABPP

I am a psychologist and a psychoanalyst. I have done this work for over four decades now, with people from all walks of life, with all kinds of life difficulties, and in a wide variety of professional contexts. I offer psychotherapy for adults, adolescents, couples, and families. I also offer consultation for therapists interested in psychoanalytic work.

My professional interest and passion is depth psychology and the human spirit. I am a long-time student of Jung and Freud, as well as contemporary relational psychoanalysis. My work is informed and deepened by study of philosophy, theology, and literature. More than a decade of post-doctoral training helps me listen well, appreciate complexity, and get to the heart of the matter – whether in short-term consultations, in psychotherapy or psychoanalysis, or in therapy with couples or families.

Experience has taught me that people fare best when they take the time and muster the courage to truly open up and face themselves in depth. When the inner life is given the intense attention its complexity demands, painful experiences are healed, conflicts resolved, and necessary changes and difficult decisions are made with integrity, confidence and wisdom. The only real way “out” is “through”.
